1937 R23 Big Little Book Series Flash Gordon Complete Subset (32)
Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $4,930.00
Complete 32-card "Flash Gordon" subset from the 1937 R23 "Big Little Book Series" card set. 15 cards grade Vg-Ex/Ex, 10 cards Vg-Ex, 3 Vg, 4 cards in slightly lesser grades. Cards graded Vg-Ex and Vg-Ex/Ex, which have been technically downgraded from Excellent due to mostly very light corner wear, are all very attractive, clean, and (for this series) reasonably high-grade cards with no creases. The corners of "Big Little Book Series" cards are notoriously susceptible to wear, due both to the stock on which the cards are printed and their original method of issue ("Big Little Book Series" cards were issued in perforated uncut strips, and had to be separated by hand). Numbered 1 through 32, the Flash Gordon series was the first issued of the "Big Little Book Series" cards. Flash Gordon is universally recognized as the key subset of the larger series, both in terms of value and rarity. The reverse of each card features an elaborate "chapter" of the sequential story the cards present. Introduced to the world in 1934, Flash Gordon is one of science fiction's greatest icons, and one of the most highly collectible characters of the 1930s. The Flash Gordon Big Little Book Series cards are highly prized by both Flash Gordon collectors and non-sport card collectors. Each card bears the "Copyright 1937, by Silverbuck, Inc.," and promotes the sale of Flash Gordon "Big Little Books." Total 32 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $4,930.00
