1930s Non-Sport Gum Card and Wrapper Collection (490+)

This collection, which dates from the 1930s to the early 1940s, is comprised of a fascinating assortment of cards and wrappers from many different sets, some well known and some very obscure, as well as a very rare window advertising poster for Gum, Inc.'s "Film Funnies" set (which is listed in the wrapper section below). We have organized this collection into three categories: non-sport cards, non-sport card wrappers, and vintage confectionery wrappers. CARDS: 1) R26 Goudey "Some Boy" (Boy Scouts) complete set of 48. Vg to Ex. 2) R48 "Film Funnies" near set of 23 different (missing only #13 for completion): 8 cards are Ex (#1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 19), 8 cards are Vg-Ex (#5, 9, 14, 15, 17, 18, 22 and 24), 7 cards are lower grades (#3, 6, 12, 16, 20, 21 and 23). Note: #4, 7, 9 and 12 are the scarcer "-2" variety. 3) R78 "Jungle Gum" complete set of 48. First series (#1-24) averages Vg; Second series (#25-48) averages Ex. 4) R65 Goudey "History of Aviation" (colorful 5-inch square paper premiums) complete set (10): #1 is Ex, #10 is Vg, all others are Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt. 5) V289 (R68) "Hollywood Picture Stars" complete set of 40 cards: Gd to Vg (minor back damage from tape). 6) R55 "Bring 'Em Back Alive" (Frank Buck) near set of 44 different (missing #8, 9, 38 and 46 for completion): 90% range from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex), 10% lower grades. 7) R152 "Tootsie Circus" (12 cards): 8 cards Vg-Ex, 3 Gd. 8) R71 "Hunted Animals" (Planters Nut & Chocolate) complete set of 25: 80% Ex, 20% Vg or better. 9) R4 "Smilin' Jack" (Eppy) complete set of 128 (as singles). Strong overall Ex condition, with just a few slightly lesser. 10) R89 "Mickey Mouse" 8 different, all Type 2. Gd to Vg. 11) R60 "G-Men" 17 different (all common #'s). All about Gd. 12) R138 "Smilin' Jack" (Novel) perforated cards: 5 different (#7-11). Vg-Ex/Ex. 13) R69 "Horrors of War" 10 different commons. Vg. 14) R124 "Sea Raiders" 10 different. 1st Series: seven cards (Gd); 2nd Series: #29, 30 and 31 (all Ex). 15) R172 "Wild West" 14 different. All Type 2. Vg/Ex-Ex. 16) R113 "Popeye Comics" 5 different: 2 Ex, 2 Vg, 1 Gd. 17) R24 "Big Thrill Comics" Buck Jones #1 (Vg), #5 (Vg-Ex), and #6 (Vg-Ex). 18) R25 "Thrilling Stories Comics": There are 40 assorted (27 different) pieces in this group, ranging from Fair to Vg-Ex (averaging Vg). Includes: "Corporal Blake" #2, 5, 6 and 8; "Crafty Keen" #1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7; "Flash Brown" #2; "Hal Hunter" #1, 3, 4, 5 and 6; "Mirtho the Clown" #2 ("Blazing Tent"), 3, 5 and 6; "Operator 7" #1 and 4; "Reckless Steele" #1 and 3; and "Yip Roper" #2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. CARD WRAPPERS: 1) R48 "Film Funnies" wrapper. Ex-Mt. Also included a "Film Funnies" window store display advertising poster which has been slightly trimmed to its current dimensions of 6 x 11 inches, but is otherwise in Vg-Ex condition. This poster is very rare and displays beautifully. 2) R157 "Uncle Sam" wrapper. Gd. 3) R60 "G-Men" wrapper (green variety): Vg-Ex. 4) R55 "Bring 'Em Back Alive (Frank Buck) wrapper: Taped at corners to paper backing with clear tape, could be removed, otherwise Ex. 5) R137 "Sky Birds" (World Wide Gum): appears Ex but has slight trim along left side. CONFECTIONERY WRAPPERS (all from the 1930s and 1940s): 1) "Pinocchio" (Schutter Candy, Chicago), 5 x 11.5 inches. Great graphics. About Ex. 2) "Eagle Bar" (Fidelity Chocolates, Boston). Fragile cello wrapper with eagle graphics. 5 x 6.5 inches. Ex-Mt. 3) "Peanut Bar" (J. G. McDonald, Salt Lake & New York), 6 x 8 inches, Nr/Mt. 4) Three different marshmallow egg wrappers (Pacific Coast Candy, San Francisco), each 6 x 7 inches, all Ex with filing staple holes. 5) "The Champ" (General Food Prod., Los Angeles), 5.25 x 7.25 inches. Nr/Mt. 6) "Grand Slam" (Smith & Son, White River Jct., Vermont). 7.5 inches square. Ex. 7) "Commodore Perry" ( L. C. Albain, Toledo). 4.75 x 7 inches. Nr/Mt. 8) "Chocolate Malted Milk Egg" (Elmer Candy, New Orleans). 7 inches square, Ex with filing staple holes. 9) "Powder River" (Hayes, Denver) 6.5 x 8 inches. Ex. This is an exciting lot which is a collection (or perhaps more accurately, several collections) unto itself. Total 490 cards, plus 16 wrappers and one window display poster. Reserve $500.
