Original 1962 Topps "Civil War News" card artwork (3.75 x 5.25 inches). This artwork was used to produce card #87, entitled "The War Ends," from this extremely popular set which chronicles the rich history of the Civil War. This is an extremely noteworthy card from the set as it features Lee's surrender at Appomattox. The title of the back of the card reads "Lee Surrenders; The War Is Over." The artwork is extremely detailed, with brilliant colors, and includes additional image area which was cropped out by Topps on the issued card. While all Civil War News card artwork is traditionally attributed to Norm Saunders, the research of Norm Saunders' son, David, an expert and scholar regarding his father's work, reveals that many cards in the set, including this one, are actually a collaborative effort by both Norm Saunders and fellow Topps staff artist Maurice Blumenthal. The artwork is in Near Mint condition and is accompanied by an example of the issued card. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $5,510.00
