Circa 1888 Tobacco Premium Album Collection (14)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,088.00
In the 1880s, in addition to insert cards, tobacco companies also offered special albums available only by mail in exchange for coupons (usually 75 or 100) which were packed with tobacco one coupon per pack. Each premium album features images of all of the subjects (usually 50 different) featured in a given set, along with additional background artwork. These souvenir albums were the top prizes offered by the tobacco companies, and have long been highly prized by collectors. These albums feature a diverse range of topics, including horses, famous people, inventors, etc. Many collectors are familiar with the few albums featuring baseball players as they are very popular and expensive. The non-sport albums are just as scarce, yet far more reasonable in price. This substantial collection includes the following albums: Allen & Ginter: 1) A1 American Editors, 1st Series including the original mailing envelope. Ex. 2) A4 Birds of the Tropics. Vg-Ex. 3) A5 City Flags. Vg/Vg-Ex. 4) A7 Fish from American Waters. Ex. 5) A9 Game Birds. Vg/Vg-Ex. 6) A10 General Government and State Capitol Buildings. Vg/Vg-Ex. 7) A11 Quadrupeds. Vg-Ex. 8) A12 Racing Colors of the World (jockeys). Vg-Ex. 9) A15 World's Beauties, 2nd Series. Vg due to cover stain upper left, interior pages Ex. 10) A25 World's Inventors. Vg. W. Duke Sons & Co.: 11) A26 Costumes of All Nations. Ex. 12) A31 Shadows includes a near complete set (missing two cards). Vg. Other Firms: 13) G151 It's All In The Draw (poker hands), U.S. Cartridge Co. G-Vg. 14) G153 Sweet Home Album (famous people), Larkin Co. G-Vg. As is often the case with these albums, most have some cover wear and this is the cause for much of the downgrading. In many cases the interior pages are much better than suggested by the overall grade assigned each album. This is an impressive group of non-sport tobacco premium albums including many very scarce titles. Total 14 albums. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,088.00
