1894 N142 Duke Cabinet George Davis

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $3,770.00

Duke cabinet cards are among the most impressive and desirable of all pre-1900 issues. They are one of the few full-color pre-1900 issues, and the only full color pre-1900 cabinet card issue. In addition, they were issued in an era (mid-1890s) in which there were very few baseball card sets, making this issue all the more significant to a serious collector. There are only four ballplayers in this set. Offered is a magnificent sample from this legendary set of Hall of Famer George Davis. Davis was one of the premier shortstops of his day, and at the time this card was issued he was a member of the New York Giants. Upon close inspection the card has some light staining in the lower right, and just a touch of wear to the bottom border edge and corners. Despite these minor faults, this is a very impressive looking card which has an otherwise overall Excellent appearance. It is a bright, clean, and very attractive Hall of Famer example from one of card collecting's scarcest and most highly prized nineteenth-century cabinet card issues. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,770.00
