1910 S74 Silk Proof Phillippe
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $696.00
Uncatalogued S74 silk proof of Deacon Phillippe is one of just five S74 silk proof examples known. All five were discovered together over twenty years ago. The group included two of Phillippe, and one each of Kling, Archer, and Doyle. The Kling underscores the unique nature of these proofs, as the S74 silk proof of Kling features him with the Cubs, whereas in the S74 set he appears only in the color set with Boston. All of the proofs differ from issued S74s in several ways: 1) They are smaller, measuring 1-3/8 x 2-5/8 inches. 2) They have a non-removable blank paper backing. 3) Most interesting, they are actually produced utilizing a completely different, and much finer weaving process. There is no comparison between the quality of the weave of the proofs compared with that of issued S74s. We believe these silks were produced as proofs for the purpose of experimenting to determine exactly what the S74 set was going to look like, and how it was going to be produced. This is the first time these fascinating S74-related silks have ever been documented in print. If anyone has additional examples, please let us know, and we will post this information on the Internet. The Phillippe is in Excellent condition. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$300. SOLD FOR $696.00
