1928 Sweetman Lou Gehrig and Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,320.00
The 1928 Sweetman set is an extremely rare and very newly discovered issue. It is uncatalogued in the American Card Catalog. The set is identical in design to E210 York Caramels, Tharps Ice Cream, and W502, but with advertising for the "Sweetman Co. Inc." of St. Louis. Sweetman was very likely a candy company. The reverse of each card features advertising for the Sweetman Company and offers an album to house the cards in exchange for 15 cents in stamps sent by mail. Offered are two key cards from this rare set: #26 Lou Gehrig and #27 Ty Cobb. Both cards are graded 50 VG/EX by SGC. Each is bright and clean, both front and back, with just a hint of border toning and a touch of wear to the corners. These are extremely rare cards of Gehrig and Cobb. We have never before encountered even a single card from this set. If these cards are not unique, they are very close to being so. Total 2 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
