1973 Topps Candy Lids Uncut Progressive Proof Sheets (7)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $5,800.00

Six 1973 Topps "Candy Lids" color process sheets, each featuring a complete 55-card set presented in their original format before being cut into round candy lids, plus counter display box proof sheet. In uncut form, these 1973 "Candy Lids" sheets are among the most interesting of all Topps proof sheets, in part because of the "jumbled" look of the images. Because the "cards" being produced were actually round lids designed to be the tops of little cups of bubble-gum, only the center portion of the images was of concern to Topps with reference to the proofing sheets, giving these unusual sheets a very unique and distinctive appearance. These rare color progression proof sheets were intended for use by the printer to help check and correct colors prior to printing production quantities. 1) Complete final process proof sheet (missing only surrounding color borders), with backs fully printed, with color bars; 2) blue and yellow printing proof sheet; 3) red printing proof sheet; 4) blue printing proof sheet; 5) red and yellow printing proof sheet; 6) additional complete final process sheet (missing only surrounding color borders), with many printer proofing notations in black on the front, and with blank back. Also included is a printer's proof sheet presenting the design of the store display box for the set, which features Bench, Aaron, and Palmer, with printer notations. This box sheet itself is ideal for display. Hall of Famers and stars in this set include Aaron, Bench, Brock, Carew, Carlton, Fisk, Gibson, Hunter, Jackson, Jenkins, Kaline, Killebrew, Mays, McCovey, Munson, Palmer, Perry, Brooks and Frank Robinson, Rose, Ryan, Seaver, Stargell, Yaz, etc. Each sheet has staple holes in the margin area on the far left side (where the complete run of all color process sheets were originally stapled together in a "book" for review by the printer). The one final process sheet with many printer notations has a couple of creases but still displays well and is in overall Very Good condition; the display box proof sheet has a margin crease (technically Vg-Ex but would frame as Ex-Mt, with printer marks as noted); the remaining five proof sheets, including the final process sheet with backs, are all in spectacular Excellent to Mint condition (with the proof cards on the sheets in essentially Mint condition). Dimensions: Each 29 x 23 inches. Total 7 sheets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $5,800.00
