Enormous 1930s-1950s Autographed Baseball Government Postcard Collection (1,003)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,220.00
Extraordinary collection of over one thousand individually signed Government Postcards, all from the same collector, all mailed and received over a period spanning more than twenty years from the 1930s to the 1950s. More than 990 different names (fewer than ten duplicates are included) comprise this very substantial and unique collection, including Negro Leaguers, owners/executives, and players. Almost (if not all) signatures were obtained during the player's career, including many rookie year or pre-rookie year signatures. An overwhelming percentage of the signatures are in ink, with most of those in fountain pen. Most have small photos that were affixed, and many have salutations, but what makes this group so unique is that they are all from the same original source, addressed to the same collector, and they are all postmarked from the the 1930s through the 1950s (all predate 1960). Included are hundreds of rare signatures of now-deceased players. Among the signers are Babe Adams, Johnny Antonelli, Luke Appling, Hank Bauer, Joe Becker, Beau Bell, Al Benton (only man to pitch to both Ruth and Mantle), Steve Bilko, Ralph Birkofer, Cy Blanton, Joe Bonetti, Rube Bressler, Clint Brown, Donie Bush, Max Butcher, Ben Cantwell, Tex Carleton, Bob Carpenter (executive), Leon Chagnon, Spurg. Chandler, Italo Chelini, Tom Clark, James "Rip" Collins, J. Louis Comiskey (executive), Virgil Davis, Paul Derringer and Chuck Dressen (on same GPC), Jimmie Dykes, George Earnshaw, Bob Elliott, Wes Ferrell, Lou Finney, Jake Flowers, J. Alvin Gardner (exec.), Joe Gordon, Sid Gordon, Harry Gowdy, Mule Haas, Mickey Harris, Jeff Heath, Rollie Hemsley, Babe Herman, Pinky Higgins, Wm. Hewitt (executive), Oris Hockett, [Homer] "Dixie" Howell, [Millard] "Dixie" Howell, Fred Hutchinson, Jack Jensen, "Indian" Bob Johnson, Sam Jethroe, Jimmy Jordan, Chet Laabs, Frank Lane, Ralph LaPointe, Dale Long, Earle Mack, Dave Madison, LeRoy Mahaffey, Alex B. McCall (exec.), Johnny McCarthy, Steve Mesner, Clyde Milan, Bing Miller, Gene Moore Jr., Wally Moses, Walt Moryn, Johnny Mostil, Ray Mueller, John Niggeling, Ron Northey, Lou Novikoff, Gerry Nugent (exec.), Bruce Ogrowdowski, Luis Olmo, Steve O'Neill, Jack Onslow, Fritz Ostermueller, Phil Page, Gabe Paul (exec.), "Whitey" Platt, Jerry Priddy, Rip Radcliff, Pete Reiser, Jack Rothrock, Frank Shaughnessy (exec.), Earl Sheely, Frank Shellenback, Burt Shotten, Harry Simpson, Moose Solters, Billy Southworth, Al Sothoron, Al Spohrer, Riggs Stephenson, Bob Swift, Johnny Stone, Monty Stratton, Vito Tamulis, Dan Taylor, Zach Taylor, Jim Tobin, Mike Tresh, Tommy Thevenow, Bob Thomson, Bob Thorpe, Bob Thurman, Earl Torgeson, George Uhle, Bill Urbanski, Roberto Vargas (M.I.A. in Puerto Rico), Emil Verban, Rube Walberg, Jim Weaver, Vic Wertz, Glenn Wright, Rudy York, Floyd "Pep" Young, Dick Williams, Artie Wilson, Gene Woodling, Johnny Wyrostek, Tom Zachary. The condition of the postcards varies from Good to Excellent, many with general age toning, and most exhibiting some minor evidence in the corners of their reverses of having once been neatly mounted into an album with old-fashioned stamp corners and then removed. The signatures are strong across the board; with very few exceptions all range from "8" to "10" in quality. An original collection like this almost never surfaces and this one contains hundreds of autographs of deceased players, with the earliest deceased from the 1930s. Total 1,003 signed Government Postcards. LOA from James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $5,220.00
