1939 Martin Dihigo Signed Five-Page Real Estate Document
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,276.00
Five-page notarized real estate document, dated February 22, 1939, is filled out on the one page requiring information by the legendary Martin Dihigo, and boldly signed using his full legal name "Martin M. Dihigo Llanos" ("9") in black fountain pen. Dihigo has also filled out the date and provided several additional lines of information as requested. The document memorializes the sale of land in Cuba which was owned by Dihigo. This is the only notarized Dihigo signature we have ever seen. Dihigo's signature is exceedingly rare, and is one of the most elusive of all Hall of Famer signatures. Like many Negro League players, there were few occasions when his signature was required or requested, let alone saved, and this was all the more the case for Dihigo, who played many years in his native Cuba, as well as other countries such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela, where the collecting of ballplayer signatures was even less popular. Dihigo played every position, and is considered by many to be the best all-around player to ever take the field. Dihigo is one of baseball's greatest legends. He has the distinction of being a member of three Baseball Hall of Fames (U.S., Cuba, and Mexico). This official document is comprised of five sheets, with printing on cover and two pages with printing on both sides. Interior pages include two official 1939 Republic of Cuba stamps and several official ink stamps. The document is very brittle and was originally attached with string binding which has since detached, but all of the pages are still present. The document is written entirely in Spanish. The title page of the document is preprinted and typed, reading: "Copia De La Escritura numero "14" de Compraventa Otorgada en "17" de Febrero de 1939 por el Sr. Primitivo Valencia Ercila, a favor del Sr. Martin Magdaleno Dihigo LLanos. Ante el Dr. Antonio S. Fuentes Sanchez, Abogado u Notario, Crures.-Cuba." The document displays very well despite having numerous minor condition flaws, mostly in the form of minor edge chipping and clear tape reinforcement along separating folds, both in no way affecting Dihigo's signature. This is a fascinating official legal document featuring an extremely rare, perfect, full-name, vintage signature of baseball's greatest Cuban star, the legendary Martin Dihigo. This document originates from the Dihigo Family. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,276.00
