Extraordinary 1955 Ty Cobb Signed Photo with Letter From Ty Cobb and Mailing Envelope
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,380.00
Absolutely stunning signed Ty Cobb photograph is flawlessly signed "To Dick Duman From Ty Cobb 5/13/55." The signature and salutation, in Cobb's trademark green ink, grades a perfect "10." The photograph is a striking portrait which was sent as a gift by Cobb to Dick Duman. Accompanying the photo is the original handwritten letter which Cobb sent with the photo, as well as the original mailing envelope. The letter (7.25 x 10.5 inches), on Cobb's personal stationery and also dated "5/13/55," reveals an extraordinarily good-natured Cobb having a great deal of fun responding to a request for an autograph by a youngster. The obvious lighthearted graciousness and fatherly tone of Cobb's accompanying letter reveals a gentle side of the great legend which was rarely seen and is very much at odds with his reputation as unapproachable and unfriendly. The letter, beautifully written on one side of a full page in green ink, reads as follows: "Dear Dick: Per lapse of time in acknowledging yours, no doubt you might have thought as in many cases your request had been passed up, unheeded, fact is I always feel honored and duty bound to answer such as yours and I add that I receive a great many requests in fact it is so much that it constitutes a burden, and I shall pledge you not to tell your friends how and why you received the enclosure for then as per past experience I will receive many requests from your friends. You sent me your picture so I send you mine. I appreciate the sentiments you expressed. I get a "kick" from your note also spelling though you are quite young for typing and spelling, tell your parents I have made a deal with you, in your possible appreciation of picture I send, you are to be sure (to) study and learn your spelling of words, if you learn spelling now you have applied yourself to be a good speller later. With very good wish (sic), I am, Sincerely, Ty Cobb." Cobb has added " - I had 5 children - " as a postscript below. The signature and all writing is virtually flawless ("9/10"). The letter and photograph are also accompanied by the original mailing envelope (8.25 x 5.75 inches), postmarked "May 13, 1955" from "Melno Park, Calif.," and addressed to Dick Duman of Denver, Colorado, in Cobb's hand. Cobb has also handwritten his return address on the envelope ("T.R. Cobb Menlo Park, Calif.") thus providing a third signature. The photograph has a single very light vertical surface crease to the left of Cobb's portrait in the white background, which is mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy; otherwise, the photograph is in pristine Nr/Mt-Mt condition. The letter is in Nr/Mt condition. The envelope is slightly torn with a section of the reverse missing, but the integrity of the front is completely intact and ideal for display with the signed photograph and letter. The ensemble is also accompanied by a notarized letter directly from Richard Duman, written in 1995 when he sold this boyhood treasure, carefully listing out and describing all three items (photo, letter, and envelope) which were sent to him in 1955. The photograph is one of several autographed items in this auction which has been submitted for grading to PSA/DNA, to highlight this recently introduced PSA service. PSA has graded the signature PSA 10 Gem Mint. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Total 3 items. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500/$5,000. SOLD FOR $6,380.00
