1953 Mickey Mantle Signed Letter
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $2,610.00
One-page letter by Mickey Mantle, typed and signed, on New York Yankees stationery, dated July 30, 1953, to a fan in response to an autograph request. The blue ballpoint pen signature is a magnificent early example, and grades a solid "9" on a scale of "1 to 10." Mantle letters are rare, and one from so early in his career is of special note. The vintage ink signature on this letter represents Mantle's earliest signature form, and differs greatly from his signature style in later years. Close examination of the letter reveals that the date, and name and address of the recipient, was typed on the letter. The short body of the letter has a slightly different typeface, suggesting this was printed directly on the sheet. It is very likely that as Mantle rose to stardom and he began receiving a lot of autograph requests, he had these short letters printed. He then signed a stack of them which were then personalized by a secretary responding to his autograph requests. The letter has three horizontal mailing fold lines, and is otherwise in Ex-Mt condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,610.00
