1958 Alfred Manuel (Billy) Martin Signed Topps Contract
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $522.00
Official contract between Topps Chewing Gum and Billy Martin gives Topps the exclusive rights to market bubble gum cards featuring Martin's likeness for the 1958 season. This one-page Topps Chewing Gum contract, dated June 15, 1958, is boldly signed Alfred Manuel Martin ("9") in black ink. After signing his full legal name, which is extremely rare for Martin, he then added "Billy" above, apparently having second thoughts regarding the extreme formality of his legal signature on the baseball card contract. In addition to being a very interesting baseball card-related document, the elaborate form of Martin's signature makes this contract all the more exceptional, since he rarely signed his full name. This style of signature was reserved for use only on official legal documents, and only a few examples are known to exist in the collecting world. The contract is also signed twice by Topps authorized agent, Sy Berger. There are a few tiny staple holes in the upper left corner of the document, otherwise in Near Mint condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $522.00
