Nineteenth-Century Baseball Figural Matchstick Holder
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,392.00
Very unusual and rare cast-iron baseball figural matchstick holder, designed to be hung in the kitchen or in front of a fireplace by a small loop at top. A base with a ball, catcher's mask, and ringed bat strapped to it with a belt appears on the front of each of the two matchstick storage containers. A ballplayer stands in the center in front of a picket fence. This is a fascinating and very high quality early baseball figural piece with extraordinary detail. No date or maker's name, but from many clues we believe this dates from the 1880s. It is obviously very rare. We have never seen another example. Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,392.00
