1871 Stratford Base Ball Club Team Display Photograph with James O'Rourke
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $1,972.00
Please Note: The extraordinary size of this photograph strongly suggests that it was created specifically for team members and/or executives of the team. The tremendous size of the photograph (15 x 17 inches) may not be apparent from a catalog illustration, so we are adding this addendum to emphasize that this is not a cabinet card, but a very rare larger photographic display piece.
Extraordinary imperial team photograph of the 1871 Osceola Base Ball Club of Stratford includes future Hall of Famer James "Orator" O'Rourke. All nine team members are neatly identified on the mount, along with the team identification ("Osceola Base Ball Club of Stratford, Champions of Connecticut, 1871"). This is a spectacular nineteenth-century display photograph, produced at great expense, and of a quality reserved only for the top teams of the day. The following season O'Rourke joined the Middletown Mansfields in the National Association, baseball's first professional league, and went on to enjoy a very successful Hall of Fame career. Stratford pitcher Frank Buttery also followed O'Rourke to the majors with the Mansfields, but lasted only a single season in the newly formed professional league. This is an outstanding early display photograph, dating from the dawn of professional baseball, featuring one of the nineteenth century's most highly regarded Hall of Fame players in the year prior to his Major League debut. Outstanding contrast. Ideal for display. 15 x 17 inches. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
