Circa 1910 King of the Diamond Hans Wagner Cigar Box
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,320.00
The only known example of the "Hans Wagner, King of the Diamond" cigar box. For a guy whose legend includes his refusal to have his name associated with tobacco, we could not blame historians taking note of this, and other Wagner tobacco-related items, and questioning the accuracy of the Wagner tobacco legend. The fact is that not all products bearing players' names and likenesses actually received formal permission. This may or may not be the case with this 1910-era Honus Wagner cigar box. There's just no way to tell. (Maybe Honus had a weakness for cigars which he did not share with other tobacco products.) The fact that this box dates from the same era as the famous T206 Honus Wagner card, and was obviously issued, gives this box all the more significance with reference to the legend of Honus Wagner. This box appeared in a small auction many years ago, which few active modern-day collectors saw, and was purchased by our consignor at that time. Its appearance in this auction will be the first time most collectors will become aware of its existence. In addition to the large label on the interior lid featuring Wagner's portrait, a smaller exterior side label also features Wagner's portrait (exterior label has considerable wear). Minor flaws include several small notations on the interior label, including a reference to the year ("1910") in red pencil. No examples of these labels separate from this box have ever surfaced. This is an outstanding display item, and one of the most significant and rarest of all early player-endorsed cigar boxes. In overall Very Good to Excellent condition. Dimensions: 4.25 x 11 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
