1889 World Tour Trophy Baseball

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $31,900.00

Presented is an extraordinary gold-decorated trophy baseball from the famous World Tour of 1888-1889. This is an actual game ball from one of the most celebrated matches of the great World Tour of All-Stars, which Spalding organized to help spread the gospel of baseball to the rest of the world. The ball is elaborately inscribed "Spalding World Tourists at Villa Bourghese, Italy 1889" and is also decorated with flag and ball designs. Before the turn of the century it was common practice for game balls of important matches to be decorated and presented to the winning team. A trophy ball from the World Tour is of special historical significance. It is interesting to note that we are aware of two other trophy balls from the World Tour, including one from the game played in front of the great Pyramids of Egypt, in the collection of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. This ball was once a part of the legendary Barry Halper Collection. It appeared as Lot #284 in the 1999 Halper sale, where at that time it sold for $8,625. It has been consigned to this auction directly from the original purchaser at the Halper auction. Some minor toning and a couple of tiny chips mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy, in remarkable condition for a trophy baseball, let alone one that has literally traveled the world. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $31,900.00
