Circa 1870 Base Ball Galop Sheet Music
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,508.00
Extremely unusual nineteenth-century baseball sheet music dating from approximately 1870 is designed with an albumen photograph of a team mounted directly onto the sheet music. Entitled "Base Ball Galop," the sheet music honors the Lyon & Healy Base Ball Club of Chicago, and is also published by Lyon & Healy. Lyon & Healy was founded in 1864 by Patrick J. Healy and George W. Lyon, and by the turn of the century was the largest music house in the world. They are still in business to this day. Lyon & Healy also published the "Catch it on the Fly" sheet music of 1867, and had their own baseball team, so they must have had a very serious interest in the game. The uniforms their team is wearing are very professional-looking bib-front style uniforms, which were popular in the late 1860s and early 1870s. The oval team photo is an exceptionally crisp image with flawless contrast and tremendous detail. A few surface folds on the cover may relate to the unusual photo mounting process; the sheet music is separating along the spine but is complete and otherwise in Excellent condition. The mounted team photograph is in Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,508.00
