Nineteenth-Century Silver Baseball Baby Rattle
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,044.00
Circa 1890s sterling silver baby rattle is designed with a figure-eight baseball with engraved stitching, a perfectly proportioned baseball bat with handle serving as the stem, and holding ring. Very close examination of the edge of the ring reveals very tiny symbol stampings which are manufacturer's markings, followed by "sterling," and a code which we believe reads "B6414." There is a bell in the baseball, so that the rattle rings when shaken. This is quite an intricate and very elaborately designed baseball item for the Victorian-era baby, which we have never before seen, and which in our opinion ranks as one of the most interesting, well-designed, and amusing functional generic baseball items we have ever seen. Excellent. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/ $800. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
