1901 Seymour R. Church Base Ball Calendar

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $3,190.00

Extremely rare multicolor calendar display, printed on quality cardboard stock, issued by Seymour Church, publisher in 1902 of Base Ball 1845-1871. The illustration on the calendar (which covers July through December 1901), as noted in advertisements offering the calendar (copies of which accompany), is reproduced from the original oil paintings designed by Seymour R. Church and painted by the celebrated artist Carl Dahlgren of San Francisco, California. The central illustration features a highly detailed game-in-progress scene. Uncle Sam and John Bull appear in vignettes at top, symbolizing baseball influences of America and England. Additional images surround the action scene: George Van Haltren, pictured in full uniform holding a bat; William A. Langley (former centerfielder for the Chicago BBC) dressed in formal attire; and portraits of Henry Chadwick ("The Father of Baseball"), umpire James A. McDonald, and A.G. Spalding. Below the image area reads, "Base Ball Calendar - Part First - Issued By Seymour R. Church- San Francisco, California." The actual calendar portion of the display is quite small, with each month represented by a tiny 1 x .75-inch calendar page along the bottom. This was the first of two calendars to be issued in 1901. The elaborate illustration on the calendar also appears in black and white on page 50 of Church's Base Ball 1845-1871 book. It is doubtful that a second calendar, covering January to June 1902, was ever issued as advertised. No example is known and Church suffered a terrible fire in 1902 which destroyed his place of business and his very substantial baseball collection. Minor surface creases and a few tears do not significantly detract from the extraordinary display value of this rare and unusual calendar display. Imperfections along the margins have almost entirely been matted out. The image area (13.25 x 10 inches) is in Excellent condition, with some tearing in the margin area visible below. This is only the second Church baseball calendar we have ever seen. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 23.75 x 19.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
