Circa 1910 Honus Wagner Cigar Band

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,160.00

Honus Wagner cigar band features a beautiful full-color portrait of Wagner, and was designed to be a part of the packaging for a brand of cigars endorsed by Wagner. This, of course, has great irony in that Wagner is so well known for the famous legend of his T206 baseball card. This particular cigar band and its related cigar box labels were apparently never issued. This example, as well as all known Honus Wagner Cigar bands and labels of this style, are proofs which were never actually used in the marketing of cigars. The band dates from approximately the same year as the famous T206 series. It is very possible these were produced, like his T206 card, in anticipation of Wagner's approval. If he turned down the American Tobacco Company's request in 1909 to issue his baseball card, he probably would have also turned down a cigar company's similar request at approximately the same time. This is one of the approximately ten Honus Wagner cigar bands known, all of which originate from a couple of small proof sheets from the files of the printer which were discovered many years ago. Like the few other examples known, this proof example is perfectly flat and has never been assembled into a band or wrapped around a cigar as designed. Ex-Mt. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
