Circa 1910 Baseball Cigar Band Collection (8)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $812.00
In addition to the beautifully produced labels which appeared on cigar boxes, cigars also had matching wraparound bands. Though many more bands were produced than cigar boxes (because most boxes held twenty-five or fifty cigars), few were saved, and in some cases the bands are even rarer than the boxes themselves. This is understandable as the boxes are much more substantial and could actually serve a purpose (storage), whereas the bands were only decorative and were meant to be discarded. This collection of eight cigar bands includes four never-used proof bands which were long ago probably saved from the printer's files, and four bands which were used as intended and are still wrapped around period cigars: 1) "Pfeffer's Hit" brand, circa 1897, features a portrait of nineteenth-century star second baseman and baseball entrepreneur Fred Pfeffer in his Chicago uniform, proof band; Ex. 2) "Jake Daubert" brand, circa 1910, issued in honor of the Dodger star, proof band; Ex. 3) "Federal League," 1914, proof band; Nr/Mt. 4) "Champion Giant," circa 1900, proof band; Ex-Mt. 5) "Chas. A. Comiskey" band on cigar, circa 1915; Ex. 6) "Harry Pulliam," circa 1909, band on cigar; Vg. 7) "Mordecai Brown," circa 1910, band on cigar; Ex-Mt. 8) "Joe Tinker," circa 1920s, band on cigar; Nr/Mt. Outstanding group of these unusual baseball advertising items, highlighted by several rarities, most notably the "Pfeffer's Hit" portrait band. Total 8 labels. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $812.00
