1911 Chief Meyers New York Giants Championship Trophy

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $16,240.00

1911 New York Giants sterling silver championship trophy presented to Chief Meyers, manufactured by Dieges & Clust. Each member of the 1911 Giants was presented with a trophy of this style in honor of their championship season. The trophy is beautifully designed with a baseball supported by three crossed bats with a floral wreath in the middle, all attached to a circular base. It is stamped "Deiges & Clust Sterling" on the perimeter of the base. "John T. Meyers - Catcher" is engraved on top of the baseball, which reads "CHAMPION 1911 GIANTS" on the front and "FROM THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK - HON. T. D SULLIVAN CH'R." on the opposite side in fancy embossed lettering. The only other 1911 Giants championship player trophy we have seen was Christy Mathewson's trophy, which Barry Halper obtained directly from the Mathewson family and which was sold in the famous Halper auction in 1999. Chief Meyers was the Giants' star catcher during the New York Giants' dynasty years, when the team won three straight pennants, from 1911 to 1913. Meyers batted .332, .358, and .312 in those years. Born John Tortes Meyers, as a Native American Indian playing Major League baseball in this era, he could not avoid the nickname "Chief." He was the best offensive catcher of the Deadball Era, retiring with a .291 average for his nine-year career. His talent on the field, his great intelligence, and engaging personality did much to shatter negative stereotypes of Native Americans in the world of sport in this early, unenlightened era. Some spots of tarnish but otherwise in Excellent condition. This is an extraordinary championship trophy, extremely rare and predating when such awards were a tradition, made by legendary jeweler and trophy-maker Dieges & Clust (who would go on to design many rings, trophies, awards, and press pins for Major League baseball in future years), and presented to the star catcher of the 1911 Giants, one of the great teams of the early twentieth century. Height: 9.25 inches. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $16,240.00
