Circa 1925 Spalding Trophy Complete Set (5)
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $19,720.00
In the 1920s and early 1930s, Spalding offered five different extraordinary figural trophies. Trophies from this series are universally recognized as among the most majestic and stunning of all baseball figural displays. Sold in Spalding sporting-goods catalogs, these trophies were very expensive. Today they are extremely rare and highly prized by collectors, and are appreciated as among the finest and most artistic baseball figural displays ever created. Occasionally a single example will surface at auction in the collecting world, but to the best of our knowledge this is the very first time in the history of collecting that all five trophy styles have ever appeared in the same auction at the same time, let alone as a single lot. In the past when Spalding trophies have been offered at auction, they have always been offered individually. These five Spalding trophies, carefully assembled with great patience over a period of twenty years, are being offered as a complete set at the request of our consignor, who spent so much time and energy assembling this collection; it is his hope that they will remain together. We have never seen all five trophies in the same place before, not even in the Halper Collection, which came closest, including four of the five. The Spalding series is the most highly displayable, difficult to assemble, and desirable of all baseball trophies. The heavy and extremely well made trophies were designed to be presented as championship awards. Each has a panel intended for presentation engraving. Produced by Dieges & Clust, each is white metal on a wood base mount: "Catcher style" trophy (Height: 18 inches, no engraving on plate), "Batter style" trophy (Height: 21 inches, engraving for "1927 Industrial League" team), "Pitcher style" trophy (Height: 20 inches, engraving for "1923 Amateur B.B. League" team), "Fielder style" trophy (Height: 16 inches, no engraving), "First Baseman" style trophy (Height: 11 inches, rare gold variety, engraving for "1933 Class A" team). Some slight tarnishing, a few very minor scratches, each in a condition far superior to what is normally found. Overall in Excellent condition. Total 5 trophies. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000. SOLD FOR $19,720.00
