Circa 1926 St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher Ceramic Statue

Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $1,160.00

1920s glazed ceramic statue features a pitcher in his Cardinals uniform. There was no Cardinal uniform identical in design to that worm by this figure but the 1926 Cardinals uniform is very close, and everything from the size of the glove, style of the figure, and paint date this statue to the mid 1920s. The figure is very unusual and striking, with its uniform painted in white with red accents. The back of the square base (4.5 x 5.25 inches) is engraved with the artist's name, "W. T. Bailey." The number "1819" is engraved on the top of the base, though we do not know the meaning of this reference code. There are very few baseball figural pieces dating from the 1920s. This is a high-quality piece and the first example of its type we have ever seen. The figure stands 14.25 inches tall. Excellent condition. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
