1873 Boston Base Ball Club Team Cabinet
Starting Bid - $4,000.00, Sold For - $9,280.00
Extremely rare team composite cabinet card (3.25 x 5 inches) features cameo portraits of the 1873 National Association champion Boston Base Ball Club, including Hall of Famers Harry Wright, George Wright, Jim O'Rourke, and Albert Spalding. Each player is identified in stylized print beneath his portrait. The 1873 Boston team cabinet has always been a favorite with sophisticated collectors of nineteenth-century baseball cards. This is one of the few cards of the most dominating team of the early 1870s, and one of the few to feature Al Spalding as a player. The 1873 Boston team card is quite distinctive from other nineteenth-century team cabinets in that its dimensions are smaller than a standard-sized cabinet card, but much larger than a CDV. This card often has somewhat light photos. The offered example is particularly strong with reference to contrast and photo quality. Clean and perfectly centered. A single fine vertical hairline in the upper left goes through George Wright's portrait, and a small amount of paper loss (approximately 10%, not affecting the several lines of copyright text) to the reverse from having once been affixed, and then removed from a scrapbook, otherwise in Very Good to Excellent condition. This is one of the better examples we have seen of this significant 1870s team cabinet card. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000/$12,000. SOLD FOR $9,280.00
