Circa 1910 Position Pins Collection (25)
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,508.00
Collection of twenty-five baseball pinbacks, which are usually referred to by collectors as "position pins." This baseball pinback set was issued in several slightly different styles. They feature illustrations of players in various positions of play, set against white or gold backgrounds, with the player's position identified by his pose and caption. These pins were distributed by storekeepers, and occasionally were produced with advertising for a specific product or establishment on their fronts. 1) Twelve Pins: A near-complete set with white backgrounds and blue uniforms: Eleven of twelve in the set, missing just "Captain" to be complete, plus one duplicate. All but one has advertising backpaper intact ("W.F. Miller & Co. 2 Chambers St. Cor. Park Row, New York"). 2) Ten Pins: A second near-complete set with white backgrounds and red uniforms: 10 of 12, missing just "Batsman" and "Captain" for completion. All with advertising backpaper intact ("W.F. Miller & Co. 2 Chambers St. Cor. Park Row, New York"). 3) Two Pins: Two gold background examples with advertising: "Second Base" and "Catcher," both with ad which reads "Drink Spartana - Healthier and Cheaper than Coffee." Both with Whitehead & Hoag backpaper intact. Also included is a circa 1910 "A.J. Reach Official American League Ball" advertising pinback. Twenty of the pins are in Ex to Nr/Mt condition, five appear Ex but are slightly lesser due to minor foxing. This is an exceptionally bright, clean, and large group of these attractive pins. Diameter: 1.25 inches for all. Total 25 pins. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,508.00
