1961 Roger Maris 61 in '61 Pin

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $464.00

Several different pinback designs were made to celebrate the excitement of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris' race to beat Babe Ruth's single-season home run record in 1961. A few designs were created during the season, and several others were issued immediately following the eclipse of the record. All are very popular with collectors. This extremely rare variety features a silhouette of Maris' mighty swing in high relief, and reads simply "61 in '61," suggesting that it was probably issued immediately following the 1961 season. The high-quality metallic pin measures 3/4-inch in diameter and, in the opinion of press pin expert Jim Johnston, who has personally examined this rarity for us, was likely produced by Balfour or Josten's. Jim's notes to us on this piece include the following: "Its quality of material and intricate detail elevate the piece to the most exclusive of stadium keepsakes. The recessed surfaces (and the reverse) have a frosted finish while the surfaces in relief glisten in high polish. The fastener is a standard needle post with clutch, in the style of many press pins. The stark rarity of this piece is substantiated by its subdued projection - inconspicuous, yet finely tailored even to feature the pinstripes of the uniform - not consistent with garish novelties common to the concession stand." We have seen only one other example, which resides in the Paul Muchinsky Collection. In Near Mint condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $464.00
