John Holway Negro League Correspondence Archive (23)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $580.00
Extraordinary collection of 23 different signatures and letters written by Negro League stars to Negro League historian John Holway. Eight letters each in some way relate to John Holway's research or book. The remaining 15 of the 23 items in this collection are cut signatures, removed as part of return addresses from original mailing envelopes sent to John Holway. These "cut signatures" thus also include the ballplayer's addresses in their hand. 1) Willie Wells (cut signed in blue ballpoint). 2) Hilton Smith (one-page ALS dated 8/13/79 signed "Hilton"). 3) James "Cool Papa" Bell (one-page ALS written by his wife but signed by James "Cool Papa" Bell, on his stationery with his photo). 4) Walter "Buck" Leonard (one-page printed letter entirely in his hand with printed signature "Buck," mentions Willie Wells). 5) Ray Dandridge (cut signature printed in his hand). 6) Monte Irvin (one-page TLS on official "Office of the Commissioner" stationery, not written to Holway, but relating to his research). 7) Effa Manley (cut signed "E. Manley;" there is a good chance that Manley will someday be the first woman to make the HOF). 8) Dave Malarcher (cut signed in black ballpoint). 9) William Cornelius (one-page ALS). 10) Geo. A. Sweatt (one-page TLS dated 1973). 11) Jesse Hubbard (one-page ALS). 12) Geo. Giles (one-page ALS). 13) W.P. Drake (one-page ALS). 14) William Cash (envelope signed "Bill (Ready) Cash" in black ink). 15) Larry Brown (cut signed in pencil). 16) Paul Stephens (cut signed blue ballpoint). 17) Floyd "Jelly" Gardner (envelope signed in black ballpoint). 18) Gene Benson (envelope signed in black ballpoint). 19) Sam Streeter (cut signed in blue ballpoint). 20) Buck O'Neil (cut signed in blue ballpoint). 21) Double Duty Radcliffe (cut signed in black ballpoint). 22) Roy Welmaker (envelope printed in his hand). 23) Quincy Trouppe (envelope printed in his hand). Overall, the signatures grade an "8" on a scale of "1" to "10." The letters are in Near Mint condition, while the cut signatures, each removed from the return address of envelopes (several include the entire front of the envelope), are difficult to grade for condition, but are all very presentable. This is a unique collection of signatures of rare and marquee Negro League figures, all sent to John Holway, one of the most noted of all Negro League baseball historians, including many highlights and rare signatures. Total 23 items. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $580.00
