1874 Red Stockings Cigar Label

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For -

This beautiful multicolor stone litho cigar box end label (5 x 2 inches) was manufactured in 1874 by Nichols & McDonald, Tobacconists of Boston and is the only label of its kind known to exist. Located at 400 Washington Street, Boston, Nichols & McDonald were the sole proprietors for Red Stocking Cigars. The only other known relic relating to this establishment and Red Stocking Cigars is a multicolor advertising poster also from 1874 featuring George Wright endorsing this product. Only one example of the advertising poster known is to exist and it is extremely significant in that it is the earliest known advertising endorsement of any product by a ballplayer. The "Red Stocking" on the label measures three inches and is identical to the one pictured on the advertising poster featuring George Wright. To the left of the illustration it reads "Manufactured by N & M," to the right "Boston." The Red Stockings Cigar brand was first established years earlier, when the Red Stockings were in Cincinnati. The only known example of an 1869/1870 Cincinnati Red Stocking Cigar box is also featured in this auction. Please note that the Red Stocking Cigars brand was again reestablished years later. Labels are known to exist featuring a generic Boston ballplayer based on George Wright's image on the 1874 poster, which are dated 1884, and were issued years after that date. These later labels are quite rare and desirable, but in no way should be confused with this earlier, much rarer and more significant label. Vg-Ex condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200.
