1887 N175 Brownie Champ Gypsy Queen Tip O'Neil
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,624.00
Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Rare Gypsy Queen "Brownie Champ" portrait of Tip O'Neil. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller N172-size Gypsy Queens (not to be confused with the even rarer large-sized N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." O'Neil was one of the primary stars of the St. Louis Browns championship teams of the 1880s. He led the league in hits (225), doubles (52), triples (19), home runs (14), runs (167) and batting average (.435) in 1887. His lifetime batting average was .326 over ten Major League seasons. The card has some pinpoint spotting in the background to the right of O'Neil's portrait, with just a hint hint of corner wear. This is a very interesting and sample of an unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue. Excellent condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,624.00
