1949 Stan Musial Chesterfield Poster
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $812.00
Full-color cardboard advertising display (21 x 22 inches) features Stan Musial endorsing Chesterfield Cigarettes. This is one of a series of posters issued by Chesterfield in the late 1940s and early 1950s featuring ballplayers. In 1949 Musial was an ideal spokesman for Chesterfield, having just been named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1948. Musial won three MVP awards in the late 1940s and was also one of the game's most popular players. The display features a lifelike image of Musial in a suit, sporting his St. Louis Cardinals cap, and enjoying a good smoke. We don't think Stan Musial ever actually went out dressed like this, with his baseball cap and sport coat, but Chesterfield was able to put Musial's head on a different body to create this absurd illusion, giving this poster a special added distinction. Displayed prominently below his image is the company's trademark slogan "Always Buy Chesterfield." A crease in the poster that runs diagonally from the top border to his fingers has been professionally restored. Strong Excellent appearance. One of the most attractive baseball advertising displays of the era. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $812.00
