1941 Joe DiMaggio Signed Louisville Slugger Display (Plus Debs Garms Display)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $9,860.00

This extremely rare Hillerich & Bradsby store display (27.5 x 13.75 inches) promoting Louisville Slugger bats features 1940 American League batting champion Joe DiMaggio. The large die-cut cardboard display stands a majestic 27.5 inches tall, has an easel back, and pictures "Joltin'" Joe standing in his road uniform holding a Louisville Slugger bat. His hitting achievements are listed next to the company's motto: "Champion Bats Make Champion Batters." This is one of the finest DiMaggio advertising pieces ever produced. This museum-caliber advertising display was once a part of the famous Barry Halper Collection. It appeared as lot #2260 in the famous Halper sale and was one of the signature pieces of the catalog, with a huge full-page illustration. It was always very prominently displayed in Barry Halper's home office, and can be seen in many photographs of the Halper Collection when it was intact. Barry bought this previously unknown display at the 1987 National Sports Collectors Convention, and had the opportunity to show it to Joe D. within a day of acquiring it. Joe has signed the piece in the green background in black ink: "Barry- Received $100 for this endorsement for a period of twenty years - Joe DiMaggio 7/10/87" ("8"). This is the only example of this extraordinary high-quality advertising display we have ever seen. The display is in Excellent condition, and is accompanied by the National League counterpart to the two-sign set, featuring 1940 National League batting champion Debs Garms. The Garms display is equally rare. It has a light crease and some small edge chips but displays beautifully, with easel back intact; technically Garms is in Very Good condition, but with a much stronger appearance. Each 27.5 inches tall. Total 2 signs. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000. SOLD FOR $9,860.00
