1984 NY Yankees Roger Maris Game-Used Signed Old-Timer's Game Cap

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,900.00

This signed cap was worn by Roger Maris on the day his uniform was retired at Yankee Stadium. On July 21, 1984, when the Yankees were hosting the Minnesota Twins, this contest was preceded by a Yankee Old-Timers' game, but the center-stage event that day was the retirement of Roger Maris' #9 uniform. The veteran Yankees took the field with Maris, of course, among them. For the purpose of that exhibition, he wore this offered cap, an official New York Yankees professional New Era model size 7 3/8. Maris gave this hat as a special keepsake on this day to his former teammate Stan Bahnsen. The lineage of this cap, since that 1984 honor, is fully documented, and accompanies the cap. On the underside of the bill is Maris' "9" in black marker. Maris has flawlessly signed the cap in black felt-tip marker just below the number "9." The signature grades an unimprovable "10." While a signed Maris game cap from his playing days, if one exists, would be valued much higher, for a post-career cap this is certainly the most significant and desirable Maris cap that we can think of that could possibly exist. Includes documentation from both Bahnsen, the dealer who purchased the cap from Bahnsen in 1994, and the collector who then purchased it for his collection at that time, who has consigned it to this sale. Light wear from being worn in the Old-Timers' game. SCD Authentic Grade: A10. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Dan Knoll/SCD Authentic, Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
