Phil Berube Original 1930s Baseball Artworks (6) In Framed Display
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,160.00
Six published 1930s newspaper cartoons by Phil Berube featuring some of the greatest stars of the era. In the 1930s and 1940s Berube produced hundreds of classic sports cartoons for newspapers, and comic books as well, helping to define the classic art of sports cartooning, and greatly influencing future sports cartoonists. While Phil Berube may not be as well known as Willard Mullin or Bill Gallo, his artwork helped set the stage for their great success; and his work is on par with both of those legendary sports cartoonists. Offered are six spectacular original artworks, executed in pen and ink on paper, created by Berube for newspaper use. Featured in this collection are illustrations of Joe DiMaggio (rookie season, dated 10/18/36, 13 x 8 inches), Bob Feller (rookie season, dated 9/10/36, 7 x 8.5 inches), Lou Gehrig (dated 6/5/39, 6 x 8.5 inches), Dizzy Dean (dated 4/23/35, 8.25 x 9.5 inches), Mel Ott (dated 8/20/35, 9 x 10.25 inches) and Mickey Cochrane (dated 10/2/35, 8.25 x 9.25 inches). Each of the artworks displays normal editorial marks and presents as Excellent. The artworks have been matted and framed together to total dimensions of 36 x 26 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
