1957 Bobby Bragan Pittsburgh Pirates Game-Used Road Jersey Plus Matching Pants

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,276.00

In 1957 the Pittsburgh Pirates decided to experiment with their uniform design by eliminating the sleeves. While a "vest" style jersey was not unique (the Cubs first introduced the style in 1940 and the Reds adopted it the year prior) the "sleeveless" design was much to the liking of both Pirates players and fans. In response, the team continued to employ the "vest" style jerseys for the next fourteen seasons before switching over to full-sleeve knits in 1971. Offered is a Pittsburgh Pirates "vest" style flannel jersey dating to that inaugural 1957 season. This particular jersey was worn by manager Bobby Bragan during his second year as manager of the club. The gray road flannel jersey is lettered "Pirates" across the front and features Bragan's number "2" on the reverse. Both the lettering and numeral have been appliqu├ęd in black on gold felt. A "MacGregor 42" label appears in the collar. Situated on the interior right front tail is a flag tag that reads "Set 1 1957." The number was originally removed by the team and then restored (by the team) some time later, as Bragan was fired during the course of the season. Aside from that team restoration, the jersey is completely original as issued. All of the original black and gold piping around the collar and sleeve openings remain firmly attached. Light wear is exhibited throughout, including minor soiling and a few light scattered stains on the front and reverse. Included with the jersey is a pair of Pittsburgh Pirates game pants (not worn by Bragan) from the same year. The gray road flannel pants feature the club's black and gold piping down the side of each leg. Situated on the front waistband are a "MacGregor 34" label and an adjacent flag tag that reads "Set 1 1957." Chain-stitched in red upon a white felt strip tag (located in the rear of the waistband ) are the numbers "25 34 25" (denoting the uniform number, size and inseam, respectively). The pants are heavily worn including numerous stains and a few small tears. Outfielder Roman Mejias wore number 25 with the Pirates in 1957. This is a very desirable Pittsburgh Pirates flannel uniform dating from the club's first season in sleeveless jerseys. The jersey is graded A7 by Mears. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,276.00
