Extraordinary 1950-1960 Willie Mays Signed Pro Model Bat
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $12,760.00
H&B block-letter model (last name only) "S2" bat displays heavy use throughout including ball marks, stitch marks, grain swelling, light deadwood on the reverse of the barrel and a small two-inch crack in the handle. Mays' uniform number ("24") is written on the knob in faded black marker. The bat has been signed by the legendary Hall of Fame outfielder in vintage black marker ("4/5") on the "sweet spot" of the barrel. This is one of only two 1950s Willie Mays game-used bats that have ever been seen, let alone authenticated by MEARS. While it is a given that Mays bats dating from his final years in the 1970s are the most common, and that bats from the 1960s are far rarer, it is almost unfathomable how incredibly rare Mays game bats are dating from his most glorious years of the 1950s. They are virtually nonexistent. Over the years Robert Edward Auctions has handled many Mays bats, but this is the first 1950s Mays gamer we have ever seen. Possessing both speed afoot and power at the plate, Mays had few peers on the baseball diamond. His 660 lifetime home runs places him third on today's all-time list; however, had he not missed nearly two full seasons in his prime due to military service he almost certainly would have been the first player to break Ruth's legendary mark of 714 home runs. In addition to his incredible home run total, he also finished his career with 1,903 RBI, 3,283 hits, eight Gold Glove awards and a .302 lifetime average. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 32 ounces. Graded A7.5 by MEARS. This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection of world-renowned bat authenticator David Bushing. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$20,000. SOLD FOR $12,760.00
