1980 Tug McGraw Signed Game-Used World Series Glove

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $7,540.00

Of all the images that capture the magic and the spirit of the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies World Championship season, perhaps none are as ingrained into the consciousness and memories of Phillies fans more than the image of Tug McGraw jumping for joy after striking out Willie Wilson for the final out of the 1980 World Series. That memorable strike out not only brought the Series to a close but also brought the Phillies their first World Championship in franchise history. Presented is the very glove worn by McGraw during that game. The glove's provenance is attested to directly by McGraw, who has inscribed it in black marker on the reverse, "I used this glove in the championship playoffs and World Series - 1980/Tug McGraw." Both McGraw's printed inscription and signature grade "6." In addition to the inscription, the Rawlings Pro Model XPG 3 left-handed fielder's glove features McGraw's uniform number ("45") written twice in vintage black marker on the reverse. The name "Tug" appears in vintage black marker on the wrist strap. An additional McGraw signature and inscription, penned in green marker ("8-9"), appear on the front thumb and read "Hey Tom/Thank you and good luck/$205.00/Tug McGraw 1981." Following his signature, McGraw has added a smiley face. The glove displays heavy wear and the leather remains firm yet supple. One of the game's top relievers, McGraw was also one of baseball's most irrepressible characters. It was McGraw who first coined the phrase "You Gotta Believe!" during the Mets World Series run in 1973. Later, he brought that same optimistic exuberance to the City of Brotherly Love. McGraw was the leader of the Phillies, and his "You Gotta Believe!" mantra defined the spirit of the team. This is not just the ultimate Tug McGraw glove. This is an ultimate treasure of Phillies history representing the 1980 World Championship season. Every iconic image and film of Tug McGraw leaping for joy captures him with this glove: jumping, flying, exhibiting an exhilaration that radiates the joy of victory, and the the joy of baseball. If ever there was a glove that is imbued with the spirit of all that is exciting in baseball, this is that glove. McGraw was one of the stars of the 1980 World Series, winning one game and saving two others. He retired in 1984 with 96 wins and 180 saves. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,540.00
