1975-1976 Dick Allen Signed Game-Used Glove
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,856.00
Right-handed first baseman's glove used by Dick Allen during the mid 1970s. The Wilson model A2800 glove features a well-worn pocket and Allen's uniform number ("15") written in vintage black marker on the outside of the thumb. Allen has signed the glove "Dick Allen" in black marker to the right of his uniform number. Appearing directly below his name is the black marker notation "1975-76." Despite contrasting somewhat poorly against the dark surface of the glove, the signature (grading "7/8") and all of the other notations remain perfectly legible. Allen was in his second tenure with Philadelphia in 1975-76 after having starred with the club from 1963 to 1969. Both a former Rookie of the Year (1963) and League MVP (1972 with the Chicago White Sox), Richie Allen was one of the greatest sluggers of his era. He was also one of the most enigmatic players in history, whose reputation as a brooding loner resulted in his having been traded six times in his career. When motivated, however, he certainly ranked among the elite hitters in baseball history. SABR has even published articles analyzing Allen's offensive statistics in great detail, as many obscure statistical approaches to evaluating hitters rank Allen to be among the best hitters the game has ever seen. It has been suggested by many that his numbers qualify him for Hall of Fame status. We may be biased, as we have always been big Richie Allen fans, but in our minds Allen has always been a Hall of Famer. Allen hit 351 home runs and 1,119 RBI in fifteen seasons and was a seven-time All-Star game selection. Today, his slugging average of .534 ranks fortieth of all time. The glove displays heavy wear throughout and is an extremely rare and desirable piece of equipment used by one of the most talented and controversial players of the modern era. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,856.00
