1921-1931 Babe Ruth Pro Model Bat

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $7,540.00

Dating from the 1921 - 31 labeling period, this H&B signature professional model bat (predating model numbers) features the facsimile signature of "George 'Babe' Ruth" stamped on the barrel. The "George" portion of the signature is lightly stamped, while a cleat mark affects the "th" in "Ruth." The bat displays heavy use and wear including surface marks, cleat marks and slight grain separation along the front of the barrel. Two small chips affect the knob, and a crack in the handle has been professionally restored and is virtually undetectable. The letter "S" (the meaning of which is unknown) has been carved into the base of the knob. Measuring 33.75 inches, the bat is a nonstandard length for Ruth model bats produced during this era. At a weight of 33.6 ounces it is also somewhat light, although it should be noted that the bat could have lost as much as approximately three ounces over the years. Both of these anomalies have been duly addressed in the evaluation process and have resulted in the deduction of one point each in the final MEARS grade. An additional half-point each has been deducted, respectively, for the chips, and the carving in the knob. Ruth bats can vary wildly in terms of length and weight. This professional model Ruth bat dates from the peak of Ruth's career in the 1920s. Despite its minor flaws, this is an extremely presentable model that offers a rare opportunity to collectors wishing to obtain an authentic pro-model Ruth bat at a fraction of the cost a higher-graded example would command. Graded A5 by MEARS (base grade of 5, with three points added for use and a combined deduction of three points for the aforementioned flaws and/or anomalies). This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection of world-renowned bat authenticator David Bushing. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000/$12,000. SOLD FOR $7,540.00
