1930s Rogers Hornsby Pro Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $696.00

Scarce Rogers Hornsby "Batrite" pro model bat features the company's distinctive center brand logo and the name "Hornsby" stamped on the barrel in block letters. Stamped to the left of Hornsby's name are the letters "TA" ("Treated Ash," denoting the company's top-of-the-line pro model bat), and to the right are the numbers "10 4" (with the "10" denoting Hornsby's particular model number as listed in the company's recently discovered 1930 catalog and the "4" indicating the bat's length). The notations "Beaver Driver" and "Steel Temper" are stamped, respectively, above and below Hornsby's name. The patent date, "1930," is stamped on the knob. The Hanna Manufacturing Co., maker of "Batrite" bats, was one of a few smaller firms competing against H&B for a share of the lucrative Major League market. While they never did unseat their competitors as the bat of choice for most pro players, a number of big-name stars were known to have used their bats for at least a portion of their careers. The bat displays significant use including grain swelling, surface marks, a slight chip in the knob and deadwood (four-inch area of grain separation) on the back of the barrel. An eight-inch multiple crack in the handle has been repaired with six vintage nails. While this bat matches the specifications of other known Hornsby pro model bats, the patent date on the knob indicates that this particular bat may have been available for retail purchase as well. Length: 33.75 inches. Weight: 29 ounces. Graded A4.5 by MEARS (the base grade was A8; however, three points were deducted for the patent date on the knob and an additional half-point deducted for the deadwood and knob chip). LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $696.00
