1964 Mickey Mantle Pro Model Bat Signed by Mantle and Maris (Graded A10 by MEARS)

Starting Bid - $10,000.00, Sold For - $31,900.00

Catalog Description Addendum: The printed catalog description identifies the year of this Mickey Mantle game bat, which has 1960 to 1964 labeling period, as dating from either 1961 or 1964, based on specifications and factory records. Very recent research regarding the length of the lightening bolts under "Powerized" on the barrel of this (and other bats of uncertain precise date with the 1960 to 1964 label) have allowed this bat to be precisely dated with 100% certainty to 1964 only. MEARS will be releasing a detailed report of this bat-dating discovery, and will be publishing this report very shortly on the MEARS website ( We have modified the title and catalog description accordingly.

A strong argument could be made that this is the finest Mickey Mantle bat in the world. This extraordinary 1960-1964 Mickey Mantle professional model bat (graded A10 by MEARS) is the ONLY Mantle gamer known to exist that is signed by both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. The offered bat, an H&B signature model M110, features all of the many characteristics of the most classic game-used Mantle pro model bat, including Mantle's uniform number ("7") on the knob (written in vintage black marker that is badly faded, but legible) and his customary application of pine tar along the middle part of the handle. Other evidence of heavy game use includes numerous ball marks, deeply embedded stitch marks, rack marks, and grain swelling on the barrel. The bat has been signed by Mantle in black marker ("9") on the side of the barrel, just below the sweet spot. This signature dates from the early 1990s. Maris has also signed the bat in black marker ("5/6"), scripting his name on the reverse of the barrel approximately two inches below Mantle's signature. The Maris signature dates from the early 1960s. This bat originally had a 1964 Mantle signature as well, but this signature was so faded that a previous owner elected to go to the trouble of having Mantle sign the bat again, with a stronger signature, in the early 1990s. When this bat was purchased years ago by nationally recognized bat expert and authenticator John Taube, Mr. Taube arranged to have the no longer present low-quality Mantle signature, along with remnants of other signatures, professionally removed. (The proper professional cleaning of bats can allow for the removal of signatures or other writing, while having no impact on the game-use or finish, and causing no damage whatsoever.) The 1960 to 1964 labeling period of this bat does not, in fact, fully communicate the likelihood that this bat dates from precisely 1964. Factory records show shipments of this particular bat to Mantle only in 1964, Mantle's last great season (35 home runs, 111 RBI, .303 batting average). Even if this bat were not signed by either Mantle or Maris, it would be one of the best Mantle bats in existence. Signed, and being the only Mantle (or Maris) game bat known to exist that is signed by both stars, it is one of the finest Mickey Mantle game bats existence. All of the manufacturer's stampings are deep and bold. This is a perfect Mantle game bat in all respects, one that stands above all others as the only example signed by Mantle and Maris, and which would serve as a worthy centerpiece to any world-class game-used bat, Yankees, or Mickey Mantle collection. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 34 ounces. Graded A10 by MEARS. The fact that this bat has been personally owned in the past by both of the world's most highly respected bat authenticators is quite a unique and ringing endorsement. World-renowned bat authenticator David Bushing purchased this bat for himself from John Taube, and it has been consigned to this auction directly from David Bushing. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $25,000++. SOLD FOR $31,900.00
