1961-1964 Roberto Clemente Pro Model Bat
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,480.00
This H&B signature model U1 bat displays extremely heavy use including deadwood on the back of the barrel (including grain separation) and a six-inch crack in the handle. Clemente's uniform number ("21") is written on the knob in vintage black marker (not in the standard style of other Clemente pro-model bats). There is a thin, six-inch long "slice" of wood missing from the back of the barrel and a small blue ink stain (approximately one-inch in diameter) appears near the side/back end of the barrel. It should be noted that neither of these two very minor condition flaws are visible when the bat is properly displayed. The four-year period 1961-64 was a highly productive one for Clemente. The perennial All-Star outfielder won two batting titles in that span, with his League leading average of .351 in 1961 representing the second highest mark of his career. Included among Clemente's impressive lifetime achievements are a .317 average, 3,000 hits and one MVP Award. After his tragic death in 1972 the Baseball Hall of Fame waived its normal five-year waiting period and inducted Clemente the following year. To date, only he and Lou Gehrig have been afforded that special honor. Length: 35.75 inches. Weight: 33.5 ounces. Graded A4.5 by MEARS (base grade of 5, with three points added for use, a half-point deducted for the crack and three one-point deductions, respectively, for the missing piece on the back of the barrel, the grain separation, and the stain/rough barrel end). LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $3,480.00
