1974 Mickey Mantle Signed Old-Timers' Day Bat
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,770.00
Although Mickey Mantle's career officially ended after the 1968 season, "The Mick" was still a familiar site at Yankee Stadium, returning each summer to take part in the team's fabled Old-Timers' Day game. This extraordinary H&B signature model M110 bat was specifically issued to Mantle for use in the 1974 Yankees Old-Timers' Day Game and its unique provenance is supported by H&B factory records. As expected with any bat issued for a one-time event (the games were normally only three innings, with each player batting just once), the offered bat is not cracked and displays no real use other than a few light surface marks. Mantle has inscribed the piece "Best Wishes Mickey Mantle" in vintage blue marker (grading "6/7") on the sweet spot of the barrel. Mantle had originally personalized the bat to someone, but the name has been removed (trace remnants are visible upon very close inspection), thus leaving just the salutation "Best Wishes." Factory records show a shipment of just one 35-inch, 31-ounce bat to Mickey Mantle in 1974, with that order having been sent on July 25th. This is that bat, sent to Mantle specifically for use in the Old-Timers' Day game. The Yankees 1974 Old-Timers' Day Game, which took place on August 3rd at Shea Stadium (due to the renovation of Yankee Stadium) was of special significance to Mantle. On that day, both he and Whitey Ford were specially honored for their recent induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mickey Mantle signed game bats dating to his playing career are virtually impossible to acquire due both to their incredible rarity (very few are known) and prohibitive cost. This bat is a very unique and well-documented signed pro model bat from Mantle's post-playing career, but from an extremely significant event relating to his career and life. Length: 34.75 inches. Weight: 31.9 ounces. Graded 6.5 by MEARS (base grade of 5, with a half-point added for its documented shipping date and a combined full point added for both its having been autographed and its factory documented Old-Timers' Day Game provenance). LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,770.00
