1971-72 Willie McCovey "Big Mac" Signed Pro Model Bat
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,972.00
This H&B block letter model W215 bat features the rare barrel stamping of "Big Mac." This is an ideal McCovey bat. Heavy use is evident along its entire length in the form of numerous ball and stitch marks, rack marks and pine tar on the handle. Also present is a twelve-inch crack along the handle. McCovey's uniform number ("44") appears on the knob in vintage black marker. The Hall of Fame first baseman has signed the bat in black marker ("9") on the "sweet spot" of the barrel. Factory records indicate that the first shipments of W215 model bats (matching the offered bat's precise specifications) to McCovey from this labeling period occurred on March 4, 1971. One of the greatest sluggers of his era, McCovey led the National League in home runs on three separate occasions during his career. He retired in 1980 with 521 lifetime home runs. Length: 34.75 inches. Weight: 33 ounces. Graded A8 by Mears (base grade of 5, plus 3 points for use, with a half-point deduction for the handle crack offset by a half-point addition for the number on the knob). LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez, Zach Rullo, John Taube & Vince Malta/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
