1894 N302 Mayo's Cut Plug Football Collection (21 of 35)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $12,760.00
Offered are twenty-one different of the thirty-five cards in the Mayo's Cut Plug Football set, one of rarest and most important of all football card sets and the only nineteenth-century card issue devoted exclusively to football. The collection is missing only the following fourteen cards for completion: Brewer, Burt, Butterworth, Crowdis, Grey, Hinkey, Lea, Mackie, McCrea, Morse, Riggs, Waters, Wrightington, and Anonymous/Dunlop. N302 Mayo's Cut Plugs are considered by many to be one of rarest of all nineteenth-century tobacco card issues. The set features Ivy League college football players of the day. Condition is very strong for these cards, which like their baseball counterparts that are similar in design, are very susceptible to edge wear due to their easily-chipped black borders. With few exceptions, condition ranges from Vg-Ex to Ex. Several cards have centering problems, which is not uncommon with Mayo Football. The entire collection is free of all creases. Each card is graded individually: Acton/Harvard (80/20 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), Adee/Yale (Vg-Ex), Armstrong/Yale (80/20 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), Barnett/Princeton (Ex), Beale/Harvard (Vg-Ex/Ex), Beard/Yale (Vg-Ex/Ex), Brown/Princeton (Vg-Ex/Ex), Emmons/Harvard (Ex), Gonterman/Harvard (2/98 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), Greenway/Yale (tiny chip to black in upper right corner of reverse, otherwise Ex), Hickok/Yale (5/95 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex), Holly/Princeton (5/95 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex), Manahan/Harvard (Vg/Vg-Ex), Murphy/Yale (Vg/Vg-Ex), Poe/Princeton (Fr-Gd), Stillman/Yale (Vg-Ex), Taylor/Princeton (Vg-Ex/Ex), Thorne/Yale (Vg-Ex/Ex), Trenchard/Princeton (Ex), Ward/Princeton (5/95 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), Wheeler/Princeton (Vg-Ex). This is an extremely attractive and very significant collection of these rarities which were just recently uncovered in Arizona. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a near-complete set (21 of 35) of this extremely desirable nineteenth-century issue. Total 21 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $12,760.00
