1895 N566 Newsboy Tobacco Cabinet Collection Including Amos Rusie (5)
Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $15,080.00
Extraordinary collection of five different 1895 N566 Newsboy Tobacco cabinet cards. Newsboy cabinet cards were issued by the National Tobacco Works of New York City to promote their Newsboy Tobacco brand. Newsboys are extremely rare and one of the very few baseball card sets issued during the 1890s. While similar in construction to N173 Old Judge cabinet cards, they are actually much rarer, all the more so in high grade as the mounts on Newsboy cabinets are not as thick and sturdy as Old Judge cabinets, and thus are also far more susceptible to damage. It is at least in part because of their greater rarity that Newsboys have not received the attention that Old Judges have received in recent years. There are only fourteen different baseball players currently known in the Newsboy set. Each is numbered and most are members of the 1894 New York Giants championship team. Included in this group is one of the few exceptions, Brooklyn player/manager Dave Foutz. Each card is numbered. The mounts of Newsboy cabinets were issued with rounded corners. The offered collection of five includes #175 Amos Rusie (Ex due to just a hint of edge wear, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt with perfect photo), #176 Michael Tiernan (tiny chip in lower left corner and minor surface scratch to mount in extreme upper right, otherwise Ex-Mt), #177 E. D. Burke (Ex-Mt), #178 J. J. Doyle (Ex), and #181 Dave Foutz (the most minute hint of wear/chipping in lower right corner, otherwise Nr/Mt). This is largest collection of Newsboys we have seen offered in many years. This is also an extraordinarily crisp, high-grade group, highlighted by legendary fireballer Amos Rusie, one of only two Hall of Famers in the set (the other being Ward, who is represented in the set by two different poses). We consider Rusie to be the key Hall of Famer in the set because his card is far rarer than either of the two Ward poses, and also because there are so few cards of Rusie in his prime as a player. This is an extremely crisp and clean group, one of the finest collections of Newsboys to ever surface at auction, and including one of the finest Newsboy Tobacco cabinet card examples in the collecting world of Hall of Famer Amos Rusie. Total 5 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$7,500. SOLD FOR $15,080.00
