1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Collection Including Ewing and Ward (3)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,190.00

Collection of three 1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug cards including two Hall of Famers. All three of these cards appear to be problem-free but each has been rejected for grading by SGC due to minor corner color touch ups on the Ewing and Ward, and rebacking on the Glasscock. Such minor alterations are relatively common with Mayos. On the Ward and Ewing in particular, it would be hard to imagine a more insignificant alteration. There is no question that it is possible to reverse the minor touch ups by having the added ink removed but it is REA's strict policy to not alter any cards for any reason. 1) Buck Ewing (Cleveland on shirt). Ewing was first issued with "Cleveland" on his shirt, which was changed to "Cincinnati" when he joined the Reds for the 1895 season. This is a very bright and crisp card in apparent Vg-Ex condition. There is only the slightest hint of retouching in the extreme corners. 2) John Ward (Retired). Extremely attractive in all respects, bright and clean, both front and back, with only a hint of white showing along the edges. Apparent Vg-Ex/Ex condition. There is only the slightest hint of retouching on the edge of the border and in the extreme corners. This is an especially fascinating card in that this example lists Ward as "John Ward: Retired." When Ward's card was first issued by Mayo, it listed him as "John Ward: Second Base," but when he retired prior to the 1895 season, Mayo continued to issue his card, changing Ward's position status from "Second Base" to "Retired." 3) Jack Glasscock (Pittsburgh on shirt). Sharp-looking card with hardly any wear to the corners and edges, outstanding image with perfect clarity, and centered to the right border (75/25). Apparent Excellent condition. This card has been rebacked. The retouching on the Ward and Ewing cards in particular is very subtle and virtually impossible to detect without a black light and a trained eye. While these cards will never be graded by PSA, SGC, or GAI, they do represent an extraordinary value for the collector who wants beautiful original ungraded examples of these classics, at a far more affordable level than graded examples with a similar appearance. Total 3 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
