Alex Haley Handwritten Signed Letter

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For -

One-page handwritten letter signed by Alex Haley (1921-92), American author. In his letter, dated March 1, 1970 and penned on "The Horizon Club" (Western Airlines) stationery, Haley writes to a friend regarding his lack of recognition for his work on a recent book. He writes in full: "Dear Lois: Layover in Salt Lake City is a chance to say thanks for your indignation on my behalf re on von Hoffman review. Numerous reviewers choose to ignore the writer, however clearly the Epilogue makes my role; but I've progressed to no more uptightness about it. A waste of energy, sort of: the really important thing is that the work is praised, and I know, and you know, and numerous others know who wrote it. And my efforts now are bent upon the next book which will bring me to light, whereupon I predict that von Hoffman and colleagues then will 'discover' that, also, I wrote 'Autobiography of Malcolm X.' Lois, I'm ashamed I never got to the promised time for your book. I just fairly fly trying to keep ahead of a cruel schedule - as now! Every best! Alex." Both the text and signature have been penned in blue ink and grade "9." What is significant about this letter is the that the "...next book which will bring me to light..." mentioned in his letter refers to his best-selling novel Roots, published in 1976. That book, which traced Haley's lineage back to an African slave name Kunta Kinte, did indeed bring Haley "to light" as it later earned him both a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. The following year it was adapted into the most successful television miniseries of all time, which was watched by millions. The letter (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal mailing folds and is in Excellent condition. A fragment of a separate piece of "Horizon" stationery, bearing Haley's printed name and San Francisco mailing address in his hand, is affixed to the upper left corner of the letter (easily removed with no harm to the letter, if so desired). LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR
