Circa 1905 Hand-Carved Carousel Figure Attributed to C. J. Spooner

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,044.00

Circa 1905 original carousel figure of a centaur, attributed to C. J. Spooner. Presumably English in origin, the piece bears striking similarities to carousel figures produced by noted English manufacturer C. J. Spooner. Following the Boer War (1899-1902), a wave of British patriotism led to the creation of centaurs as carousel figures, with the upper bodies bearing the likenesses of domestic, political, or military heroes. This one represents a sea captain clutching his orders. The piece has been repainted (common for most early carousel figures) and is otherwise all original. 52L x 12W x 54H inches. Please Note: due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping charges may be substantial. Reserve $1,000. Estimates $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
